Coffins, Coffins & Casket

Any box used to bury the dead in is a coffin. A distinction between "coffins" and "caskets", using coffin to refer to a tapered hexagonal or octagonal (also considered to be anthropoid in shape) box used for a burial and casket to refer to a rectangular burial box with a split lid used for viewing the deceased as seen in the picture above.

The Question is, my dear friends... would you lie in a coffin, actually lie in it for a while? Have you ever wondered, maybe just out of curiosity ... what does it feel like inside that wooden box... with the lid closed?

Well, people today are more receptive and open to the topic of death and coffins... on the coast of Ghana, the Ga tribe approach death in an interesting way.

The coffins they create are brightly colored, elaborate and festive. Often called "fantasy coffins", they represent something about how deceased lived. Coffins are created in the form of fish, animals, cars, bottles, Bibles, and any other object requested. A fisherman may get a fish coffin; A carpenter, a hammer; or a photographer, a camera. Someone devout may choose a Bible. Vices like beet bottles and cigarettes are also used.

Whatever it is... we do have something in stored for you along these lines, but then who's going to let the cat out of the bag? No, it will definitely not be me... you will have to come to find out...

if there will be or there will not be, a coffin a casket, and a body to see :)

Understanding Death..........

Is it possible for us to change the way we think about death?

Death evokes a variety of feelings and fears in most of us. Some of us spend our lives worrying about death. For others, death seems remote, something that 'cannot happen to us', until the idea of death draws closer either by old age or by the death of one's loved ones. Death is inevitable, yet commonly seen as undesirable and scary. May be it is time to revaluate our attitudes towards death.
Fear of Death
'What will happen after I die?' is an oft-asked question despite the huge number of religious and spiritual books that claim to have the answer. The fear of death is basically the fear of the unknown.

We seek continuity of ourselves in every moment of our lives. When we transfer this desire to the unmapped territory called death, a strange fear grips us.

To a certain extent, fear of death is natural, and a necessary survival mechanism. By being afraid of death, we take appropriate precautions such as being careful with fire, wearing a safety belt in the car, etc. However, this fear sometimes takes an irrational turn, and manifests as a crippling phobia or a violent thought that refuses to leave your mind.
Embrace the Inevitable
During the time of the Buddha, a poor old woman lost her only son. Driven by anguish, she implored the enlightened one to bring her son to life. In a voice brimming with compassion, he said "Mother, do not grieve. I will restore your son's life. But for that, bring me a handful of mustard seeds from the house of someone where no one has died." The poor woman went from door to door, asking for mustard seeds, only to realise that death had not spared anybody, rich or poor, young or old. Realising the futility of her request, the old woman joined the Buddha's monastery.

Realising that you are going to die someday is the first truth you have to come to terms with. The Tibetans have a saying, "Of all the meditation techniques, the one on death is supreme". This does not mean thinking morbid or scary thoughts, but realising in a calm way that all that is born will have to die some day.
Celebrate Death
Sogyal Rinpoche, writer of The Tibetan Book of the Living and Dying, says, "In Tibet, we do not celebrate the birthdays of the masters; we celebrate their death, their moment of final illumination".

The unorthodox spiritual teacher, Osho was asked why his followers celebrate death. He replied, "Yes, my sannyasins celebrate death because they celebrate life. And death is not against life; it does not end life, it only brings life to a beautiful peak."
Psychological Death
Some view life and death simply as two sides of the same coin. They believe one cannot truly live without dying to one's yesterdays and tomorrows.

Exploring the concept of psychological death further, philosopher J. Krishnamurti says, "You cannot live if you do not die psychologically every minute. This is not an intellectual paradox. To live completely, wholly, every day as if it was a new loveliness, there must be dying to everything of yesterday, otherwise you live mechanically, and a mechanical mind can never know what love is or what freedom is."
Do we really die?

The common theme of most religions is the presence of an afterlife such as heaven, hell, or another life on Earth or some other realm. In a unique phenomenon called near-death experiences (NDE), many people though declared clinically dead were brought back to life. In their 'dead state', almost all had a common theme: passing through a dark tunnel and seeing an indescribably beautiful light at the end of it, which was the epitome of love, beauty, and compassion.
Our purpose on Earth
Another important aspect of most NDE survivors is their changed perspective to life. They emerge as better human beings with a greater appreciation of life, now that they have come to terms with their fear of death. They have a heightened sense of purpose, and are concerned about their families, friends, society, and even the planet.
We do not need an NDE to appreciate life. Each one of us can live life to the fullest, without regrets. Everyday, ask yourself these three questions:

Have I lived life to the fullest? Have I loved? Have I laughed? When the answer to these simple questions is always 'yes', death can no longer scare us; it is just a pleasant culmination of the greatest gift on earth—life.

An Elder Monk, one day, was on deep thought about the worldly activities and the ways of instilling goodness in human. The following is the text of conversation between him and his disciple.

One of the disciples approached him and said humbly “Oh my teacher! While you are so much concerned about the world and others, why don’t you look into the welfare and needs of your own disciples also”.

Elder Monk: OK…Tell me how I can help you?

Disciple: Master, My attire is worn out. Can I get a new one please?

Elder Monk found the robe indeed was in a bad condition which needed replacement. He asked the store keeper to give the disciple a new robe to wear on. The disciple thanked Elder Monk and retired to his room.

A while after, he realized, what he should have asked the disciple? He went to his disciple’s place and asked him “Is your new attire comfortable? Do you need anything more?”

Disciple: Thank you my Master. The attire is indeed very comfortable. I need nothing more.
Elder Monk: Having got the new one, what did you do with your old attire?
Disciple: I am using it as my bedspread.
Elder Monk: Then…hope you have disposed off your bed spread.
Disciple: No…no…Master. I am using my old bedspread as my window curtain.
Elder Monk: What about your old curtain?
Disciple: Being used to handle hot utensils in the kitchen
Elder Monk: Oh…I see…Can you tell me what they did with the old cloth they used in Kitchen?
Disciple: They are being used to wash the floor.
Elder Monk: Then, the old rug being used to wash the floor…????
Disciple: Master,
since they were torn off so much, we could not find any better use, but to use as a twig in the oil lamp, which is right now lit in your study room….

Elder Monk smiled in contentment and left for his room.

Moral:
Can we at least attempt to find the best use of all our resources at home and at office….??
It becomes imperative in the critical time of Recession…..

It's all about fashion this weekend as we found this unique 120-Zipper Dress Design by Sebastian Errazuriz which gives a new meaning to the word 'Unzip Fashion'. The wearer can simply zip and unzip along any of the horizontal zipper lines to convert their clothing in a matter of seconds!

What might be most remarkable about this design is how quickly it can shift from elegant to sexy, a full-length, single-piece dress one could potentially wear to work into a skimpy, short-cut, two-piece number that could put some bikinis to shame. In between there are any number of other options for shortening the top or bottom or even leaving some zippers partly on and partly off.

Despite the obvious benefits in terms of variable style, temperature and so on there are some clear drawbacks to this design as well. How much cold metal can you, after all, take on your skin? And do you really want to give any passerby 120 ways to undress you in the blink of an eye? How many of you caught the buzz on Eve Ensler's The Good Body performance by our very own Malaysian ladies? If you did, you did good, but if you didn't you can catch an excerpt on it from MalaysiaKTV (of course it's much better if you were actually there to watch it). The show was truly inspirational and a wake-up call as I had been on a treadmill for the past few months trying to lose the extra baggage I've been collecting for the past year! How do you actually define a Good Body? Is it slim, tall with a flat tummy? Or is it round, fuller and curvier?

The Good Body, written by internationally acclaimed playwright Eve Ensler explores the experiences with monologues representing women from Bombay to Beverly Hills. It began with her and her particular obsession with her "IMPERFECT" stomach. Delivering narratives collected in locker rooms, cell blocks, boardrooms, and bedrooms, Ensler frames their stories with her own personal journey from a self-loathing teenager to a (sometimes) self-accepting adult. A young Latina candidly critiques her humiliating "spread", a stubborn layer of fat that she calls "a second pair of thighs". The wife of a plastic surgeon recounts being systematically reconstructed, inch by inch, by her "perfectionist" husband. An aging magazine executive, still haunted by her mother's long-ago criticism, describes her desperate pursuit of youth as she relentlessly does sit-ups.

My personal favourite was the women in Africa who lived close to the Earth & didn't understand what it meant to not love their body. She points to a tree and said "Do you like this tree?" She points to another tree and said "Now do you like this tree?" And then rationalizes "You do not like this tree because it does not look like that tree." When someone does not look the same like the other, we tend to think that something has to be fixed. I was also lifted by the women in India who celebrated their roundness. Bella's portrayal of Priya was amazing. Her husband exclaims as she told him she will spend her time on a treadmill "Priya... Priya.. your body is like my country. I will be lost without its landmarks." There is a Jeddi (roundness) in all of us!

Are we celebrating it and how are we going to do it???

What is the meaning of independence to each one of us???

What does matter and why???

1. why are we fighting for rights, must it be given in the first place?

by recognizing it ourselves first and foremost...
can our rights and independence can be exercised by being mindful, is the first step to inner peace before world peace

living it, walking it, talking it and practicing it peacefully, and quietly....
we pick up the right to love ourselves first....

2. the right to love and to be loved by one is everyone's birth right, the ability to love and receive makes us human.

3. by practicing respect to all living creatures regardless of gender, race, age and relation, and accepting every individual living creature as they are is practicing universal rights which no law in this world can prohibit.

4. Is religion an issue?

I will not allow any man or woman to tell me who I can or cannot love, and I believe God is a loving God, not a judge and a punishing Father, and we are all his children and creation.

I think this year for Independence day, I will celebrate my independence by freeing the mind.
I will set my self, mind, and thoughts free... and live.

I will life it to the fullest and I will life a life worth living and celebrated my independence fully before I exit this world.

Good Management for Dummies.

Most of our normal lives are spent at work. Either you work for someone, under someone, or with someone. You could be a manager, boss, supervisor, vice president, workmate or subordinate. No matter what designation you hold, you will always find yourself working alongside other people.

Some of us work around the clock saving precious lives, some of us stay up way past office hours to meet deadlines, some are on the roads risking their lives for the sake of keeping their jobs but there are some who work from 9-5, close their lappie's, pack and go but never really leave. These poor souls are chained to bad people management thus spending their entire lives wading in office trivials without even being physically present.

The key to balance a healthy work-life environment involves the co-operation of every single employee at the workplace. Ive listed some of the very basic practices you can adopt based on my own experiences as a working proffesional and a human being.

1)Respect other peoples time
When someone leaves the office, their lives outside the confines of this paper crunching, printer buzzing, keyboard tapping environment BEGINS. Someone else out there, a family member, a loved one or a friend is waiting for this person to spend whatever little time is left of the day together. The least you can do is to leave this person alone.

2)Refrain from calling or texting
This applies to everything else unless the person paying their salary decides to kick the bucket. There will be juicy gossips to tell because everything always happens after they have left the office. The world will still be round, so these can wait till tomorrow.

3)Do not interupt break time
Everyone deserves a break. For one solid given hour enforced by the employment and labour law/act, imagine these people who are on their well deserved breaks away in Timbuktoo. Since they are not anywhere within "coming back radius", you are not to call or text them back to the office. You can be rest assured to have a good nights sleep knowing that no one is spending their one hour breaks bitching about how their lunches were screwed because of you.

4)Be generous with compliments
No one wants to do a bad job. When something is done right, open your mouth and say "well done". You will not lose anything by doing this. People like to be complimented for their efforts and recognising this brings out the potential in a person. They begin to believe in themselves. This automatically generates efforts to work better and smarter to live not only up to your expectations but theirs too.

5)Be open
The best practices in work-life is an open door concept. Do not shun away anyone that walks through your door who has something to say. Take it as a priviledge to be able to listen to someone who is unhappy or unsatisfied. You may not be able to make things better for them but being someone who people can talk to is an excellent quality. There is a reason why humans have 2 ears and only 1 mouth.

You have probably read this or heard this in a seminar somewhere, but some of you blockheads out there havent learnt anything and still do what you do best..making people's lives a living hell. Be considerate, you could be the reason for someone's bad day.

If you dont have a life outside the office, doesnt mean others dont deserve one.

I received an sms today morning from a colleague that read "Michael Jackson is dead .. check CNN" .. automatically I got up, grabbed my remote and clicked on CNN. And as much as I wanted to believe that it is not true .. well it turned out to be true.

Instantly I teared a little, thinking back of the fond memories, when he was down here in Malaysia to perform and how my elder sister went berserk just wanting to see Michael Jackson. Although, at that moment we could not afford to buy a ticket for his show, she was persistent enough to go for his concert and heard him sing outside the stadium and managed to get a glimpse of his hair. The memory stayed in her head. She recalls every minute of it .. even when it happened like 10 years ago.

After watching CNN, I logged in my facebook account and read everyones facebook status .. majority was mourning over his death until I saw this one status that read "Why is everyone mourning over a child molester?" Seriously, no one really knows the extent of the claims. Children was his life. He built Neverland for them ! How could he?

Then, there are people who are saying that MJ is not really dead. It's a marketing gimmick. Oh well, it shows how stupid humans tend to be sometimes.

Whatever it is, I can safely say that the nation mourns for your death MJ. It has been a rather gloomy day today. It's rather odd cause it's gloomy in Los Angeles and here in Kuala Lumpur. And it doesn't help that my colleague sitted infront of me has been listening to your songs all day long. Sheesh.

MJ, I dedicate my whole childhood to you. I was raised with your voice, with your songs. All thanks to my sister, she introduced you to me.

With that, may your soul rest in peace. You will always be No.1 Pop Star to me.

Farrah Fawcett as we all know her, one of the Charlie's Angels passed away after losing her battle with cancer. She was 62.

Fawcett, best known for starring in the 1970s television program “Charlie’s Angels” and posing for a now iconic swimsuit poster, was first diagnosed with a rare form of anal cancer in 2006. Though she was declared cancer-free in 2007, her cancer returned and metasticized to her liver.

Do check out her video titled “Farrah’s Story,” a sometimes uplifting, sometimes painful and thoroughly transparent documentary that chronicles Fawcett’s fight against cancer.

Our little adventure to an "Outdo dinner"....

Well... as usual, unpredictable as the weather, We, meaning myself the wicked one and the cheeky one, decided to attend a little pot luck dinner organised by an independent, non-profit set up called the OutDo, (slogan) Empowering Women. They meet up once a month to discuss topics like the Perfect woman, Faith N me, Pride and prejudice (Homophobia), and Sexxxxxxx..... !!!
(why and how we missed that week, God knows... but I shall request for a part 2 of that session now that we know Cheryl.... hee hee hee)

The topic of the night we went for was, "Coming out'...
Anyway, Cheryl started outdo because she felt there should be a small community gathering like this, safe and quiet with food of course being the common ice breaker to get those jaws open and relax to talk about things that we don't get to talk about, one being our sexuality, about what me thinks and what you sayssss.....

Questions that whispers in our mind that we don't think we need to ask, common mistake for many, that leads to many communication breakdowns, when later we try to find the link into ourselves, and our own emotions, we cant cause we don't know what they are... (tak tanya tak tau kan???)

Its a very casual and relaxed arrangement, nothing complicated, no passwords or secret code or hidden map locations, just an email, what we need to bring to feed and address is give to the location, which is to the house of a very generous and kind hearted soul who has a very big and trusting heart to open her home up to 9 or 10 strangers from all walks of life... , We salute!

Anyway, we rushed from work cause one of the small conditions mentioned was, please try to be on time..... hee hee hee, stressssss..... we arrived last....
Everyone was comfortably seated at the dinner table, and introduction was already going on, I was still catching my breath when Cheryl explained the night and the reason and the topic, my eyes busy staring at the food on the table
(sigh! lapar pulak tu, rush from the office, jam and penat...) and suddenly I realised I was not in a very comfortable state of mind, .... mind in wrong gear.

a quick check at meself, mind and thoughts... I stopped spacing out to her moving lips as she talked.. I focused and back to the dinner table just in time to hear her say, " .... and now maybe we can continue hearing about what x has to share, (x sitting next to me... ) fuhh... peluhhhh....

We were allowed to eat while another person talked, apa lagi, suap-ping the salad into my plate and passing the pasta and struggling with the sushi rolls, alamak!! my turn pulak.... tu lah... (mental note, must come early for these kind of events.... grrr...) between my errssss... errhmmm.... ahhhh I managed to give a short intro, then gave up and said in a very simple manner, " please ask me question later lar, if you have any... " *( hee hee hee.. like conducting a theatre workshop je.... soalan anyone??? CEHHH!!!!)

Anywaysss, the night went on as the topics varied from coming out, and families, x husbands and x girlfriends, work and confusion, God and Buddhism, personal journeys and self discoveries. We concluded the nights dialogue in a few simple pointers....

1. More of these gatherings should be happening for many "younger" womyn out there. (why, because many are still unsure, just come out, just discovered they are gay like me for example, and for those who are still in their teens, college just stated work life... (WLU members, please do go for these dinners, they are yummy and conversations like these are healthy!!!)

2. These gathering help us see we are not alone. They may even say things that we already know from the start but need reaffirming. They help us see people who are really comfortable in their own skin. (I learn a few things just from listening, fuhh terror!! and I like the part where they won't push you to talk, u can if you are comfortable, or u can just blend into the furniture...I blended in with the food... hee hee hee)

3. It is no longer about having to see sex or love compulsorily linked to gender. It is who we have chosen to Love and its a choice we make with our eyes and heart open. We make the choice and we have our own opinion about it.
Bearing in mind, so do other people around us and we have to live by it, with it, then only can we say we have an open mind and this is an independent world we live in today.

4. As others learn to respect the choice we make, so must we welcome their thoughts of us and why, which with these question that they ask then can we begin a two way discussion.
Of understanding, of choice and of the bigger picture, its not about Coming Out of the boundaries made by family and society, or culture or status of wealth or sickness... its breaking down the boundaries of who and how one can or choose to love.....

Coming Out of ourselves, our minds, our bodies and our own world... in our own time, space and to people whom we are responsible for, we make the call....

With this knowledge we then move on and we just Love... because to me...

Love knows no gender, age, status... Love withstands time, death, greed, fear and anger....

Love heals and sets us free, bound by nothing made or taught of this world...

Love just is.....

Whadayaknow Brown will serve up to five years of supervised probation and six months of community labour. Like wtf right? Don't get me wrong. I have no issues with CB, I only have major issues with Women Beaters. The son of a gun should have been imprisoned for this !

Influenza A (H1N1) FAQ

With 3 schools being closed down for H1N1 here in Malaysia and some of us being sick, lets educate ourselves with some H1N1 facts.

What is the A (H1N1) influenza?
It is a respiratory disease of pigs caused by type A strains of the influenza virus. It regularly causes high flu outbreaks in pigs but with low death rates. There are four main sub-types of the virus, but the most recent isolated influenza viruses from pigs have been H1N1 viruses.

How does it spread?
Influenza A (H1N1) viruses do not typically infect humans though they do occur through close proximity or contact with infected pigs or contaminated areas. Cases of human-to-human spread have been documented.

What are the symptoms?
The symptoms are similar to those of regular flu:-
Fever-Lethargy- Runny nose- Cough- Sore throat- Lack of appetite- Vomiting and diarrhoea in some cases.

Can the A (H1N1) flu be treated with antiviral drugs and flu vaccine?
The A (H1N1) flu is resistant to two common drugs – Amantadine and Rimantadine. The A (H1N1) flu viruses are very different from human H1N1 viruses. Therefore, vaccines for human seasonal flu would not provide protection. However, a “seed vaccine” has been specifically tailored to this swine flu and will be manufactured if officials deem it necessary.

Can people catch A (H1N1) flu by eating pork?
No. The A (H1N1) influenza viruses are not transmitted by food. Eating properly handled and cooked pork and pork products is safe. Cooking pork to an internal temperature of 70ºC and above kills the swine flu virus.

What can I do to protect myself from the A (H1N1) flu?
There is no vaccine available right now to protect against the A (H1N1) flu.
However, you can help prevent the spread of germs that cause respiratory illnesses like influenza by:

Covering your nose and mouth with a disposable tissue or handkerchief when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the waste basket after you use it.
Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also helpful
Try to avoid close contact with sick people. - If you get sick with influenza, stay at home and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Consult your nearest healthcare facility if you think you have any of the symptoms.

What precautions are in place in Malaysia?

The Health Ministry’s operations room in Putrajaya has started a 24-hour monitoring of the situation. The public can call 03-8881 0200/300 for enquiries.
Those returning from Latin American countries and found to have flu-like symptoms will be quarantined.
Health Ministry officials are conducting health screenings on passengers arriving from the United States.
Thermal scanners will be placed at international airports to speed up the screening process for A (H1N1) flu.
Public and private medical practitioners have been instructed to report to the district health office any patient with influenza-like illnesses or severe pneumonia symptoms and who had travelled to the affected countries after April 17.

A womynkind forwarded us this link called The Global Period Project which is a social media experiment that aims to synchronize all the women of the world's periods. Yes, you're probably thinking "Why would I want to know how many womyn out there has the same period cycle as I do?" We've all heard about the theory that the menstrual cycles of women in close proximity often synch up, so the agency in Miami decided to buid a social networking tool via Global Period Project to see if it can replicate this effect with virtual contact.

Can the women of the world get on the same period schedule via social networking? Is it social media's feminist celebration of the much maligned monthlies? It is suggested that 98 percent of these women live in developing countries. The AIDS epidemic has had a unique impact on women, which has been exacerbated by their role within society and their biological vulnerability to HIV infection.

Generally women are at a greater risk of heterosexual transmission of HIV. Biologically women are twice more likely to become infected with HIV through unprotected heterosexual intercourse than men.

In many countries women are less likely to be able to negotiate condom use and are more likely to be subjected to non-consensual sex.

Additionally, millions of women have been indirectly affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Women’s childbearing role means that they have to contend with issues such as mother-to-child transmission of HIV. The responsibility of caring for AIDS patients and orphans is also an issue that has a greater effect on women.

There are a number of things that can be done in order to reduce the burden of the epidemic among women. These include promoting and protecting women's human rights, increasing education and awareness among women and encouraging the development of new preventative technologies such as post-exposure prophylaxis and microbicides.

When was the last time you went for a Lock & Key Party and had some girlie fun? If you haven't heard or been to DeBar, it's in Tmn Desa, same row as Enigma (remember those Enigma-pool days?). We headed down there and with admission fee of just RM15, you get to pick a lock or a key and get a free drink!

The mechanic was simple, to go around and find your match by unlocking the lock with your key and win a prize. Here's the funny thing, even though the prizes were keychains of googoodolls, bettyboop and such, everyone was really excited about finding a match to the lock & keys! It was full house til after midnight... amazing. With the r&b tunes and young crowd enjoying themselves, DeBar was spot on in coming up with a party to their targeted crowd. I guess we'll be watching out for the next event by them soon!

Does it really take 600 people lives for Hamas to end its missile attack to Israel and vice versa? Our hearts go out the men who lost their wives and children, for the women who lost their husbands and children, for children who lost their parents, families and will have to lead a life which is filled with bullets & guns instead of parks and tic-tac-toes.

In response to the recent attacks, WLU will be praying in silence and hanging out with our loved ones and families with much appreciation. Post Holiday Blues & Then Some

It's back to work and I'm guessing most of us would have trouble getting out of bed, re-snoozing the alarm on our handphones before we finally get our butts to work.. oh yes those are the signs of the post-holiday blues alright. Well, there's the CNY holidays to look forward to and Hari Wilayah (for us KL-lites yipeee!)...

And even though we're hit with the post-holiday blues, we're still up to do a lot of things or have the energy to attend events and social activities such as the upcoming PICK & GRAB II Flea Bazaar organized by Lah'Lah; Land @ Hartamas Square, Pandora Lair's Club 69 and a gathering which may possibly happen next Friday night. All in the name of love and all things passionate.

Personally I kinda missed those days when we all knew where to head when it came to the weekends. Having read KLWord recently, I agree and recalled those days where we just wanted a place to chill with the girls, drink (except for me though, Coke will do please!) and be merry... in the colourful nights of "Liquid". Now that the place is no longer there, we sort of have different places to hang out every weeke but it's never the same because as the places segregate so did the crowd with some hanging out at one place and the others at another.

I mean just recently even the LBB creator was really, really surprised to see us at her event! She thought we wouldn't show up because we were from a different group but that's not how we work here in WLU. Even though we may or may not know you well or whichever social group /sites/affiliation you're from, when it comes to supporting the womyn, we do try our bestest to be there because we know how much it means to you to have people attending the event and take part in the cause/the party/the network etc which you believe in. Of course the intention has to be nice though ya. It is indeed challenging to expect a change in everyone at one go but we believe that once you've showed the commitment, be honest in what you believe in, hearts will definitely melt. If not, well there's always karma. Hehe.

And so we leave you with this campaign trail message to start your votes on the LBB page now because it ends on 31st Jan 09. Be wise and show them how smart we are when it comes to deciding the best candidate to represent Malaysia as the proceeds from the sale of the planner will go to a charity body and yes this is the real deal folks. Amazing ON THE NICHE.

We stumbled across this event hosted by Puss in Boots 4 hours before the show took place. "Recovery Thursday" featured an all girl band called ON THE NICHE playing funky acid jazz with the charming laid back NISH on Keyboards, groovy hip swaying LAWLA on Bass and last but not least, IZWIN on vocals, with a voice so sexy and pitch perfect!

We were deeply amazed by the amazing vocals and the band who has real background music experience. They're really good! But for a band who was amazing, the crowd was very minimal perhaps because of the all night parties held the night before and last minute publicity. Even so, we still managed to enjoy the night and sang along to "Ma Cherie amore" and "It ain't over til it's over...." even if it was just the 3 of us clapping loudly at the end of the show.

Oh well, since many of you did not get to enjoy the show, check out the video below and hear it for yourselves. To the girls of ON THE NICHE, you guys are absolutely amazing and talented. Can't wait to check out the next show.

Little Black Book Nominees Party - NY Eve!

We all had separate plans on the eve of New Year 2008 because there were too many parties going on such as the All girls party at Retro Club featuring DJ Q-Lock and there was also a party at Maison featuring a PLU Australian DJ! In the end, we decided to head over to the Little Black Book Nominee Party @ Club 69 whom I must say did a wonderful marketing & PR work within 10 days away from the party!

Because we were so kiasu and didn't want to be stuck in the jam, we reached KL by 730pm, without any jam! Hmm... since it was too early, the best thing to do would be to chill at the mamak before the party starts.

Even then when we entered at 945pm, we were the first ones to arrive ( of all days, we were so punctual! ). Soon people were trickiling in and by 1130pm the show started. The organisers made sure that the branding was apparent (with the LBB printed backdrop), the door gifts was pretty good and they had the girls giving out shots at RM20 just as they promised.

Stef Lim who is the creator of the LBB group/project emceed for the night and started the party with the fashion show. Although only 6 out of the 42 nominees walked the runway that night, the commitment and passion only showed in them and we wished that more nominees would have taken part instead of just having their pictures up for nomination. Even the troupes from Singapore came all the way down to support the show! After all, the whole idea of the event is for CHARITY.

There was also performances by Sapphoric Acid and a pole dancer who decided not to pole dance in the end. But thank God for her groovy dance moves which kept us entertained.

As the clock struck 12am, we countdown-ed the night and bid farewell to 2008 and cheered for the year 2009. May it be filled with happiness, laughter, kind hearts and such.

Wow what a night! It was the first ever fashion event attempt by WLU @ Club 69 but we made it through the end even though some of ya'all mentioned that you didn't get the memo on the event and didn't know what the event was about ( erm.. and we thought most of ya are Facebook addicts ). Next time around, we'll send smoke signals on any upcoming event and hopefully that will grab your attention. *wink*

We'd like to thank the people who made the night possible.. especially the talents who joined us at the last hour standing in for the sick ones. Kudos to you for the commitment and for not tripping on the runway!

Then there's also the Kariza Design & LollipopLove peeps who sold their clothing line just as you enter the club... not only are they pretty, the prices offered were cheap! Even our crew were spotted holding 2-3 bags of colourful rainbow beach wear top and skirts.. tsk tsk and we were supposed to be working that night.. *innocent face*. Sales from the bazaar goes to Asrama Cahaya Home for the Disabled Ladies in Convent Bukit Nanas.

Oh and the belly dancing performance by Sheila Khan was shakin'! If only we had that belly and could move like her.. then erm.. (wishful thinking). The dance inspired some of us to stop eating french fries and to take up belly dancing classes! *shimmer shimmer*

We'd also liked to thank DJ Q-Lock for spinning awesome R&B hits the whole night and we look forward to having her spin more for us in future events!

December brings lots of love... lots of joys... lots of laughter & LAST MINUTE SHOPPING, penning down resolutions to lose weight, to make time for friends, to live life more and enjoying the EVERLASTING PARTY which starts from PRE-XMAS EVE (yes it means earlier than XMAS eve even) all the way to after NEW YEAR!

Yes we love the occasional bar hopping too but wouldn't it be just lovely to STAY PUT at Club 69 Heritage Row on the 20th December and enjoy all that in ONE GO? Yes yes.. all in one go!

Most of us love fashion even though we pooh other people who are constantly matching their shoes with their bags or wearing labels which are hard to pronounce... (loowee veeton darrrrlinggggg!) but we do it unconsciously whether we realize it or not. With the likes of Kariza Designs and LolipopLove joining the charity wagon, we can't help but glee in delight at the mentioned of a BAZAAR!

Not only that, those who are aspiring to be the next Malaysia Top Model or Miss Universe will benefit from the Lady Like Workshop, by Gangez J who has 12 years experience and exposure as a runway model. Rather than practising THE WALK with books balanced on yer head (it won't increase your IQ darlinggggg), stop by her booth and give her a go. And oh yes.. don't forget us little people when you get FABULOUSLY FAMOUS!

We've got lucky draws for those who bring their names cards and we're spinning R&B music because we hear you ladies love to groove and sway your hips...

Now do remember that there is a purpose to this event.. and that is to raise as many many $ as we can for a disabled home for womyn. It's so heart wrenching to see them abandoned or abused by their families.. and so if you've been naughty this year, it's time you balance it out with a little kindness and love through donations or join us when we visit them again sometime soon. Any means of support would mean the world to them.. and if it means the world to them.. it means the world to us too for having PEOPLE LIKE YOU supporting us...

charity for the women disabled home.

8th December 2008, the morning was filled with excitement even though it had rained the whole night and apparently still drizzled as we started our journey towards the Asrama Cahaya Home for the Disabled Ladies in Convent Bukit Nanas.

Looking back it all started as casual talk, a light discussion that would go with tea tarik … a meeting of minds and a throw of ideas, the urge to do something for society, to give a bit of our time, smile and good blessings.

Two months later, here we stand, the WLU mini entertainment team, on this cold sleepy morning, before this old building with grand arches and thick pillars, where the door squeaked and creaked, sounding the times and commanding respect on all its visitors.

Little did we know, and were we ready to be greeted by so many cheerful smiles, kind and gentle eyes, warm hugs, and an ever friendly hand shake welcoming us, pointing us, ushering us in, they all awaited our visit with such eagerness that our sleepiness left in an instant.

As planned we helped with the décor for the up and coming festive, putting up the Nativity crib of Nazareth, setting the Christmas trees, and sticking the Styrofoam wordings on the ceiling which received a lot of instructions, directions, smiles, criticism and teases as it seemed to be all crook-ity crook-ed to them, having a good laugh at us, it would seem they were tickled and giggling as they walked on by.

After finishing the décor they all gathered for some song and games, many danced and laughed, as we all enjoyed ourselves.

It would seem to us now that we went with the intention to share and were touched in return, with what little that we have given we have received in ten folds and more, with what joy we have imparted to them they have doubled back to us and opened our eyes and hearts to see their simple life and how they are happy with that little they have. They have accepted with how little they were born with, and like little children they accept what life has offered them and they are contented, truly it made us think deeply of our own.

We spent the collections from the photo shoot at the previous Slumber Party & generous contributions from fellow WLU members for twelve large juicy and delicious Hawaiian pizzas, which was their favorite we were told with them for lunch. Again we received endless thanks and handshakes from them as we ended the day with a happy and grateful heart, minds filled with peace and thankfulness for this day that they have allowed us to share with them, for the eyes of our heart were truly opened and it didn’t cost us much, just our simple, honest and open self.

Ladies,

Anyone interested to do some loving this Christmas?

The handicap center at Bukit Nanas needs some cheering this season. They have about 30 elderly abandoned, handicap & disabled ladies living there since birth, and many of them have no family.

On the 6th December, Magic Makers will be there to decorate the place with the Christmas tree and tinsels. It would be lovely to team up as they are only about five of them doing it in loving memory of Peter Lo. We can have a small session of caroling, games, music and dance.

Let me know ASAP if you're interested in cheering these handicap people together with Magic Makers this Christmas.

World AIDS Day 08'.

Hey ladies,

We know how much we’ve bombarded everyone with messages on World AIDS Day but I can’t help but emphasize on how much this means to us !

In Malaysia today, more than 80,000 people are infected with HIV and we are facing a concentrated epidemic with 1-5% of populations having contracted the virus. And every year, Pink Triangle Foundation celebrates World AIDS Day to bring awareness to Malaysians on the need for shared action.

Therefore, we are inviting you to join us to celebrate this worldwide event, either by attending the event, making a donation to support local HIV services or wearing a red ribbon to raise awareness. Please refer to other things happening this weekend.

The Red Carnival Welcome Party @ Club 9 and the SIX Lounge
28 Nov (Friday) from 9pm till late.

An event by Club 9 & the SiX Lounge (Heritage Row opposite Maison) in collaboration with The Under Shop to raise fund for Pink Triangle in conjunction with World AIDS Day 08'.

The UNDER Shop will be launching the limited collection of RAW (The Under Shop in-house brand) with 50% of the sales proceeds going to PT for HIV prevention work. There will also be a string of entertainments such as fashion show by KARIZA Designs, auctioning of Hot Hunks & Hot Chicks, Pole Dancers and chair massage with a donation of RM20 going to PT.

It starts tonight at 9pm onwards… There is a cover charge of RM30 for those who did not RSVP.

The WORLD AIDS Day Red Carnival Event @ Sungei Wang Plaza
29 & 30 Nov (Sat & Sun) from 11am – 7pm.

The event aims to raise RM100,000 for HIV / AIDS Work and exemplify the need for multi-sectoral response to HIV. Malaysians especially the enforcement authorities need a new approach to HIV if we are to contain the HIV from spreading.

As mentioned before, us girls @ Womyn Like Us have been actively involved with the World AIDS Day - Red Carnival 2008. Thanks to everyone who signed up to volunteer and help out with the carnival.

The RED CARNIVAL is a public event organised yearly by PT Foundation aiming to raise the public awareness and create opportunity for public engagement in HIV preventions and education work in Klang Valley.

Area of Volunteering

- Put up a performance at the Fiesta Street
- Be part of the Mobile Team to give out IEC material, Red Ribbon,
Helium Balloon and raising fund through selling of PT merchandise
and Red Carnival Donation Box.

Alrighty, this post is to clear some rumours going around. I've heard loads of stuff and wish to make everything clear by writing this post.

Firstly, Womyn Like Us (WLU) is basically set up by me (Pam) and another friend (who later backed off the project) for all the womyns out there. When I say "womyn", it simply means all biological females irregardless of your sexual orientation. In a nutshell, WLU celebrates womyn from all walks of life either through music, dancing, performing, photography, art etc.

I carried on with this project with help from friends like Fie and few others who have been total sweethearts. I cannot thank you girls enough. Honestly speaking, I appreciate all the help and support you girls have been giving me all this while.

Secondly, Womyn Like Us is not under Purplelab.net, Puss In Boots nor any other Girl group. It's an entity on it's own. Yes, WLU may collaborate with any of the groups but at the end, it's an entity on it's own. So please, stop asking me if it's a Purplelab event or any other group for the matter. I'm really tired of answering this question over and over.

Thirdly, I've received few e-mails asking/wanting to be part of WLU. Everyone is a part of WLU. I have my own admins/crew .. who are basically people I personally know and adore. WLU is not recruiting any admins/crew for now but if in any event in the future, that I might need some help, I'll certainly buzz y'all but for now, WLU is still growing and hopefully, we'll be hosting more events etc in near future. I have tons of plans for WLU but I don't have the time to do everything at one go .. so please, give me some time until I sort my other stuff. Only then I'll be doing more bigger/happening events and others.

Last but not the least, I'd like to thank everyone for all the support given. Without y'all, WLU wouldn't exist. Once again, thank you.
